public.project.abstract

The project aims to study the impact of the sea patrimonialization in Ericeira town. Through the ethnographic method, together with interviews and documentary research and in accordance to Pierre Bourdieu's theory of practice principles, the project intends to observe how the official discourses on Portuguese maritime heritage and multiplicity of coast and beach uses (leisure and work) define, or redefine, the practice of surfing and fishing activities in Ericeira. The aim is to analyse the dynamics and strategies between surfers, fishermen, local people and the relation between this sport and the local economy, municipality and entities responsible for the sea patrimonialization, within the frameworks of National Strategy for the Sea 2013/2020 and town elevation to World Surfing Reserve in 2011. We also want to understand how surfers and fishermen performative action by relation to the sea constitutes and consolidates a maritime narrative.
