José Mapril is a PhD in Anthropology from the ICS, University of Lisbon, with a thesis on Transnationalism and Islam among the Bangladeshis in Lisbon. Currently, he is an associate professor in the Department of Anthropology at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa and a senior researcher at CRIA NOVA. Between 2018 and 2021, José was the coordinator of the executive committee of CRIA. His main research interests are transnationalism, migrations, subjectivities, cultural citizenship, Islam, Islamophobia and secularism, through multisited ethnographies in Portugal, Bangladesh and the UK. Currently he develops a project on racialization of labour and citizenship among Bangladeshis in Portugal and, a second, on heritage making and the place of Islam in Portugal.
