Abstract
The aim of this research is to analyse the role of Islam in family dynamics through the study of conjugality and gender relations in Portugal. It proposes to discuss and question the relevance of the religious dimension in conjugality and gender capturing, on the one hand, the relevance of normative and regulative character of various Islamic religious traditions in family dynamics and, on the other hand, how these are integrated and interpreted in the households" daily practices. Gender is an analytical category, insofar as it is an essential social marker in the definition of conjugality, domesticity, kinship and a particularly politicized aspect in political and academic debates about Muslims in Europe. This research proposes to ethnographically discuss the importance of Islam as one of the guiding principles of Muslim"s world-view while highlighting the significance of other social dimensions for the construction and meanings of family ties and practices.
