Biographical Note
Raquel Carvalheira is an anthropologist with a Ph.D. in Anthropology of Gender and Kinship (Institute of Social Sciences, University of Lisbon, 2015) and an Invited Assistant Professor at NOVA University, School of Humanities and Social Sciences in Portugal. Her doctoral research addressed gender relations and family dynamics in Morocco, particularly changing values and practices concerning marriage and divorce. Currently, she is a postdoctoral researcher at the Centre for Research in Anthropology and co-coordinates the thematic line Azimuth - Studies in Arab and Islamic Contexts. Her subjects of research address gender, Islam, and citizenship, and she recently worked on charity and social care as forms of social participation among Muslims in Portugal. As a result of this research, she is a member of the COST ACTION "Who Cares in Europe?" working group. She published in English "Changing Family Strategies in Contemporary Morocco. Women's Stories, Persistent Ideologies, and Matrimonial Strategies" (2016) and, in Portuguese, the book Feminine Morocco. Conjugality and the Family (2020). She is one of the directors of the documentary A Ramadan in Lisbon (2019, 66m).
