Abstract

The questions addressed in this project revolve around three complementary axes: A first axis consists in better understanding the "academic Islamophobia" expressed in the writings of essayists and social science specialists; a second axis consists in better understanding the place occupied by this academic Islamophobia in traditional daily newspapers placed online; and a third axis consists in: (1) examining the reception of academic and media Islamophobia by people who define themselves as Muslim in the six cities in question; (2) exploring the dynamic interactions between this reception and people's subjective experience with Islamophobia; and 3) documenting their personal and collective strategies for dealing with Islamophobia.

We will proceed with content analysis of academic publications in the social sciences and conduct media and ethnographic data collection and analysis to document the three axes of the project and their interrelationships.

Islamophobia, despite the debates raised by the notion, remains a current local and global social reality. It is legitimate that Islam, Muslims and Muslim women are subjected to criticism. It happens, however, that the notion of Islamophobia is invoked by "religious extremists" to silence any criticism of Islam and Muslims. Such use of the notion of Islamophobia is contrary to the freedom of expression that is the basis of any democracy. Islamophobia, however, is also an aversion to Islam and Muslims and a hostility that invites certain social actors to elaborate hate speech and hate crimes. Islamophobia is part of a relationship of social domination accompanied by an attempt to inferiorise, dehumanise and animalise the Muslim Other. It will also be interesting to explore solidarity between Muslims, but also between Muslims and non-Muslims, in order to confront Islamophobia.

This project will provide a better understanding of the mechanisms and multiple forms of Islamophobia. Based on empirical results a critical counter-discourse is proposed that can be used in the media by columnists, journalists, readers and elected politicians. The outputs will also be used to raise awareness among the general public through seminars and a virtual platform. The results will be translated into recommendations for policy making. The symposia will also be an opportunity to cement the relationship between the researchers of the consortium.
