Abstract

This project pretends to analyze how uncertainty becomes a constitutive element of daily life, based on the ethnographic study of two fishing communities: Setúbal and Olhão. It is intended to understand the productive and reproductive activities mobilized by fishermen and their families to respond to an unstable daily life and to understand how life projects are designed under these foundations, framing the impact of European integration on the sector and the effects of austerity policies in these communities . In parallel, the relationship between the State and informality will be studied. The aim is to analyze macroeconomic processes from the way they are experienced at the local level. Starting from a reflection on the endemic instability and uncertainty of fishing, which have been associated with a permanent crisis, we intend framing it in the neoliberal economic model, which has been promote the precariousness of living conditions and, consequently, intensified a framework of widespread instability. This will allow us to contribute to the debate on fisheries management, which makes it possible for the sustainability of those who live in it, communities and resources.
