With the “Racism in Portugal” Seminar, CRIA seeks to foster debate on racism within the Portuguese context, questioning the production and negotiation of identity categories, processes of racialisation, and the construction of narratives about nation and empire. The seminar also examines the creation of the “Other”, as well as the institutional and structural racism present in Portuguese society and its discriminatory practices.
The initiative aims to promote spaces for discussion and engagement on the formulation and implementation of public policies addressing racism, conceptualising it in an intersectional manner, articulated with other forms of social and gender inequality. It also seeks to reflect on the narratives that diminish Portugal’s role in both the transatlantic slave trade and the structural racism of the colonial project, as well as on how the legacies of this historical oppression and discrimination endure in contemporary society and manifest institutionally—bringing to the discussion the persistence of everyday racism, as highlighted by Grada Kilomba.
Launched during the pandemic, the Seminar has promoted wide-ranging and cross-cutting debates, addressing topics such as education and pedagogical practices, the restitution of museum-held heritage, racist practices perpetuated by state agents, curricular content in education, and the issue of representation within state bodies.
