public.project.abstract

The aim of this project is to identify ethical issues associated with the production, use and dissemination of human remains (HR)’ replicas in academia. Specifying which ethical issues have surfaced due to the digital massification of heritage is a pressing issue across several scientific fields in order to ensure an ethical technological development in line with best societal/community practices (Carew, French, Rando & Morgan, 2023). This project responds to it using an ethnographical approach. It will focus on HR as they feature heavily as digital assets in academia, often objectified as collection artefacts, deterring the recognition of their humanity. This project will inform on associated ethical issues by exploring people's sensitivity and sensibility to HR replicas. The project will also contribute with an anthropological view on issues related to Open Science and HR and museum collections curation.
