Markets have been historically central in the European cosmology of cityscapes. Although its social and physical decline in highly urbanized areas has been noted specially along the second half of the twentieth century. Today, however, several urban markets have been "re-used" through heritage schemes that try to combine the old and the past with the present and the idea of modernity. Focusing the city of Lisbon, my aim for this research project is to analyse the multiple ways that connect heritage and safeguard discourses with other pressing issues such as the gentrification of city centres, population and spatial renewal, consumerism and lifestyle patterns, and the growing investment of touristification based on these same lines.
