Abstract

We propose to show collaborative drawing in the study of ritual, following the routes of production, circulation and consumption of talisman images (Bùa chú), in Vietnam, in particular in the provinces of Hanói, Bắc Ninh and Thừa Thiên Huế. The scope and richness of the images that are burnt in ritual events, in the street or in the temple, as well as the potential of a better knowledge on the multiplicity of ritual practices of the cult of ancestors,  prompts the study of the social life and agency of these objects from the discourse of the different interlocutors that experience them – printmakers, sellers and consumers, but also those who pay homage, researchers, religious, or artists, leading one to know the relationship they establish with these images as well as with the votive objects and rituals related to them. To understand and update the study of ritual we propose to show, through a collaborative approach, the potential of ethnographic drawing for knowledge production, considering different approaches to drawing, valuing diagrams, maps, annotations and other preparatory drawings.
