Abstract

Project attributed to CRIA to evaluate population attitudes in lynx reintroduction areas and associated identification of key themes in Portuguese territories. The project is part of action D.9 of project LIFE IBERLINCE (Project LIFE+NATUREZA 10 NAT/ES/000570 "Recovery of historical distribution of Iberian Lynx (Lynx pardinus)" and is foreseen under the Action Plan for Iberian Lynx Conservation. The aims of the study are: to analyse local people's evaluation of natural area protection and conservation programs for large carnivores; to study local perceptions about lynx and related carnivores; to analyse attitudes towards Iberian Lynx, understanding species knowledge and tolerance towards reintroduction in selected areas; to evaluate the population's attitude towards reintroduction and uncover reasons for positions; to recommend guidelines for LIFE project communication and for administration decisions concerning the process. The results of this study can be a baseline reference for future research and evaluations of lynx conservation in Portugal.
