Biographical Note
Rosa Maria Perez is a former professor at the Department of Anthropology, ISCTE- University of Lisbon Institute and is currently a senior researcher at CRIA - Center for Research in Anthropology. From 2000 to 2010, she was a visiting professor of Anthropology at Brown University in the USA, holding joint appointments in the Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies, the Department of Anthropology, and the Watson Institute for International Relations. Furthermore, she has been a visiting professor of Anthropology at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Gandhinagar since 2012 and continued in this role until 2025.
Her primary research interests encompass Indian society and social segregation, with a particular emphasis on Dalits and women, as well as on colonialism and postcolonialism in India. She also investigates fieldwork methodology, the intersection of public anthropology and human rights, and the relationship between anthropology and cinema.
Perez is a member of the Council of the European Association for South Asian Studies (EASAS), the Academic Council of the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS) and a consultant for the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) of the United Nations
She has served as a consultant for various European committees on India and South Asia and Anthropology. Perez is a member of the editorial board of Portuguese and international scientific journals. Her recent publications in English include, among a variety of articles, the books "A Transdisciplinary Ethnography in India: Women in the Field", co-edited with Lina M. Fruzzetti, London, Routledge, 2022, "The Tulsi and the Cross. Anthropology and the Colonial Encounter in Goa", Delhi, Orient Blackswan, 2012 (1st and 2nd editions out of stock), and "Kings and Untouchables. A Study of the Caste System in Western India," 2004, New Delhi: DC Publishers.
