Biographical Note
Pedro Pestana Soares is a doctoral student in Anthropology at Universidade Nova de Lisboa, where he researches Sufi-inspired Islamic movements in the outskirts of Lisbon, their transnational articulations, and the suburban setllement of Muslim communities in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. In 2016, he completed his Masters in Anthropology at ISCTE-IUL, with an ethnography of Angolan Catholic missions that host children accused of witchcraft. Previously, as a member of Númena - Research Centre in Social Sciences and Humanities, he worked on minority religions and religious discrimination in Portugal and integrated the multidisciplinary team of "The Pilgrimage Project: A Study of Motivations and Experiences in Sacred Spaces", undertaking fieldwork in several Christian and Neopagan pilgrimage sites around Europe. He was the recipient of the first edition of the Religious Liberty Prize, awarded by the Commission for Religion Freedom for the research project "Religious Discrimination through the Eyes of Minority Confessions".
