IV Political Ecology Meeting 2025
Territories and Resistances
May 23–25 · Coimbra (CES, República Inka)
May 30 – June 1 · Lisbon (Iscte Conhecimento e Inovação, ICS-UL, Cooperativa Rizoma)
Onsite and Online
The 4th edition of the Annual Political Ecology Meeting, dedicated in 2025 to the theme "Territories and Resistances", offers a diverse space for reflection, sharing, and collective construction of knowledge and practices around political ecologies, territorial resistances, and alternatives to extractivism. From Coimbra to Lisbon, over six days, researchers, activists, artists, and communities will gather in panels, workshops, plenaries, film screenings, and community events — fostering interdisciplinary and intercultural dialogues.
Coimbra · May 23–25
The first part of the meeting takes place in Coimbra, with activities at the Centre for Social Studies (CES), in University Republics, and in outdoor settings.
Friday, May 23 opens with a welcome session at CES, followed by debates on green extractivisms, Marxist ecologies, and urban resistances. The day ends with a workshop on land sovereignty, dinner, and a film screening at República dos Inkas.
Saturday, May 24 focuses on feminist ecologies of the Global South, and ecofeminist and Indigenous knowledges, featuring talking circles, hands-on workshops, and a roundtable on Coimbra’s Republics as spaces of resistance. The day ends with another film screening and social gathering.
Sunday, May 25 invites us into nature with the activity "In Defense of Living Rivers" — a kayak descent on the Mondego River, accompanied by conversation on environmental conflicts linked to the river. (Advance registration required by May 17)
Lisbon · May 30 – June 1
The meeting continues in Lisbon with sessions at Iscte Conhecimento e Inovação, the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon (ICS-UL), and the Rizoma Cooperative.
Friday, May 30 includes parallel panels on energy and conflict, Indigenous knowledges, local and international resistances, as well as counter-cartography workshops and a debate on technology and critical information. The day concludes with dinner and a screening of the documentary "LA CUENCA: Ontologies of Water".
Saturday, May 31 offers participatory workshops, book launches, exhibitions, cooperation games, and a network assembly. The evening ends with a community dinner and a salsa night hosted by the collective La Salsa del Pueblo.
Sunday, June 1 concludes with the workshop “Listening to Environmental Justice”, focused on field recordings and collective sound improvisation in landscapes affected by ecological injustice. It will be held in a studio in Lisbon and is limited to 12 participants. (registration required by May 29)

Organisation
The Meeting is organised by an emerging collective of groups and individuals forming part of the Political Ecology Network. It aspires to be a space for feeling, thinking, and acting together — a territory for sharing knowledge and fostering collaborations and synergies among territories, movements, struggles, and forms of resistance, both within and beyond academia, including activists and local communities.
