Francisco Freire, PhD in Anthropology (NOVA FCSH, 2009), Master’s in Anthropology of Colonialism and Post-colonialism (ISCTE, 2003). Currently affiliated with CRIA - NOVA FCSH as a Principal Investigator (PI) of the ERC-funded project CAPSAHARA: Critical Approaches to Politics, Social Activism and Islamic Militancy in the Western Saharan Region (ERC-2016-STG-716467). From 2001 his research is focused on the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, specifically on the political aspects of Islam, the processes of historical identity reconfiguration of its hassanophone population, shifting more recently to the contemporary articulation of the Saharan tribal spheres.
