Biographical Note

Amaya Sumpsi began her studies in cinema at the University of San Francisco (USF, California) and continued in Madrid, where she graduated in Film and TV Direction by the School of Arts and Cinema. In Spain, she worked on several feature films as an assistant director. After moving to Portugal, she began her documentary work with directors such as Christine Reeh, Tiago Pereira and Raquel Castro. In 2012, she completed her master in Anthropology - Visual Cultures at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. The master thesis won the Octávio Lixa Filgueiras Award given by the Maritime Museum of Ílhavo for the best work in Studies of the Sea and her documentary "Meu pescador, meu velho" was selected for more than 20 national and international film festivals, winning the Camacho Costa Award for the best Portuguese documentary at Cine Eco 2013. She is currently a PhD student in Anthropology at FCSH-UNL, with the thesis "Between islands: ethnographies of circulation in the Azores" and prepares her next documentary, "Santorini Express". She is a researcher at the Centre for Research in Anthropology, group of Visual Anthropology and Arts (NAVA-CRIA) and collaborates in cinema programming for the Festival of Anthropology, Cinema and Art in Lisbon (FACA) since its first edition in 2014.
