Opening of the Exhibition Foto Arte Ganesh – Goa, Photography and Memory
We are pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition Foto Arte Ganesh – Goa, Photography and Memory, which will take place on 15 May 2025 at the Museu do Oriente, in Lisbon. Curated by Rosa Maria Perez, with assistant curator Douglas Santos da Silva, the exhibition is supported by CRIA – Centre for Research in Anthropology and will be open to the public from 16 May to 12 October 2025.
A view of Goa through Ganesh’s lens
The exhibition brings together a remarkable collection of photographs from the archive of Goan photographer Krishna Navelkar, also known as Ganesh, his chosen name. Over nearly four decades, Ganesh documented key moments in the history of Goa, from the end of Portuguese colonial rule to the major social and political transformations that shaped modern Goa.
More than simple visual records, Ganesh’s photographs are living testimonies of a time and place in flux. His portraits of streets, celebrations, everyday life and anonymous faces capture not only images but memories and emotions that resist oblivion.
A tribute to plural Goa
The exhibition adopts a multidisciplinary approach, combining written and visual materials to reflect the social, cultural and religious diversity of Goa. In honouring Ganesh, the exhibition also pays tribute to the people of Goa and to the complexity of a region that has continually reinvented itself over time.
Curatorial visits
Throughout the exhibition period, several curatorial tours will be conducted by Douglas Santos da Silva, offering the public an in-depth perspective on Ganesh’s work and the context in which it was produced.
