CRIA informs that the Call for PhD Grants - 2025 in all scientific areas, promoted by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), will be open from March 17th to April 16th, 2025.

In the form you are required to upload the support letter from your supervisor. The letter can be an email from your supervisor. It is mandatory that the supervisor is a CRIA full member.
If you apply for the specific line in a non-academic environment, it is also mandatory that to upload in the on-line form the letter of recommendation/email of your supervisor at the non-academic institution.

a) after the deadline (March 27th);
b) without the recommendation letter from your supervisor.
The proposals will be examined and CRIA’s decision will be communicated to candidates until April 2nd, through the e-mail address provided in the form.
Important:
1. There are two types of application:
a) Regular line of application - The research activities of PhD studentships in academic environment may be carried out in any academic institution, national or international, including public and private higher education institutions, R&D units, Associated Laboratories, as well as other private non-profit institutions mainly developing R&D activities. The work plan may be developed entirely or partially in a national institution (studentship in Portugal or both in Portugal and abroad, respectively), or fully in a foreign institution (studentship abroad).).
b) Specific line of application in a non-academic environment – The research activities of PhD students are for the most part carried out in one or more non-academic institutions, thus reinforcing a closer relationship between doctoral research in academic and non-academic environments. The non-academic institution should host the studentship holder during a considerable part of the work plan leading to the doctoral degree. All institutions not included in the academic environment as characterized in the regular line of application are considered as non-academic host institutions, e.g. business companies, Collaborative Laboratories, Technology and Innovation Centres, Interface Centres, Public Administration, State Laboratories, hospitals, museums, libraries or other third sector institutions. Doing justice to its rationale, in this line it is mandatory to include in the application at least one national non-academic host institution and one academic host institution (national or foreign), as well as a scientific supervisor from each of these institutions.
2. Only one application per person is allowed, regardless of the type of application.
3. Check the regulations of the PhD program where you intend to apply/are enrolled. In most of these programmes the supervisor must be a professor at the respective university.
4. The cv will be associated to the application through the CiênciaVitae platform. If you do not yet have it on this platform, you must do so. It is mandatory.
(Ciência Vitae webpage and tutorials here: https://www.cienciavitae.pt/tutoriais/?lang=en)
5. PhD applicants having obtained previous degrees from a non-Portuguese University: it will be necessary to register the degree and have the grades converted to the Portuguese scale. Without this the evaluation results can be undermined. You can do it at Direção-Geral do Ensino Superior or in a Public University: https://www.dges.gov.pt/en/pagina/degree-and-diploma-recognition, and add the registration document to the application form.
6. To apply for a PhD studentship, it is necessary: To be a citizen permanently and usually living in Portugal, in case the work plan of the requested studentship proceeds, entirely or partially, in foreign institutions (in case of both in Portugal and abroad or exclusively abroad studentships); this requirement is applicable to both national and foreign citizens.
[Although it’s not mandatory at the time of application submission, it’s mandatory to sign the grant contract.]
