The Etnográfica Spotlight webseries is back with an interview with José Sobral, an anthropologist and retired researcher at the Instituto de Ciências Sociais da Universidade de Lisboa, led by Patrícia Alves de Matos (CRIA-Iscte). This interview was recorded on 7 March 2024 at the FCCN studios and explored José Sobral's participation in linguistic projects such as the "Vocabulary of Fundamental Portuguese" (1971-1974) and the "Linguistic Atlas of Europe" and "Linguistic and Ethnographic Atlas of Portugal and Galicia" (1975-1977), at the Lisbon University Linguistics Centre.
During the talk, fundamental themes were addressed, such as the need for a historically informed anthropology, studies of the Portuguese rural world, social reproduction, and studies of memory, national identity and nationalism. In addition, Sobral shared his perspective on food studies as a means of understanding the articulation between the local and the global in contexts of social change.
Etnográfica em Foco | Etnográfica Spotlight is a webseries and section of AGORA - Etnográfica's new website - dedicated to interviews to renowned persons in the field of anthropology, confronting the authors with their path and ideas.
