Etnográfica Press has just published the third edition of the book O Sítio das Drogas, by Luís Fernandes, now available online in open access, at OpenEditions.
About the book
There are social worlds which, by the secrecy of their practices, are simultaneously the target of great fascination and attention and of great preconception and ignorance. The "drug world" is one of them. Based on his ethnographic research, the author proposes in this book a journey through the psychotropic territories: areas of the urban periphery where the daily life of the sale and consumption of illegal psychoactive substances is lived.
In a style closer to the narrative than to the academic text, we are taken to places where the common experience of the city is interrupted, giving way to a street sociability that has drugs as its central element. The book is, after all, the proposal of a close and inner look at this distant category of the "marginal worlds", seeking to clarify the mechanisms that operate in the production of the rear of the city and its marginal actors.
