Expanded Ethnography Cycle: Between Research and Experimentation
Ethnography, both as a method and as a research outcome, has evolved beyond its traditional role in anthropology, becoming central to various social sciences and contemporary artistic practices. The Expanded Ethnography Cycle seeks to explore this dual approach, welcoming research and initiatives that go beyond conventional formats, embracing openness and experimentation.
The first session, #1 BASEMENTS AS SOCIAL MACHINES, takes place on February 18, featuring a programme that brings together ethnography, music, and gastronomy. The event starts at 18:45 with a talk by Francisco Martínez, an anthropologist whose research focuses on the use of domestic basements in Estonia. Martínez’s study examines the role of these spaces as social, cultural, and emotional infrastructures.
In response to this research, the cycle invites DJ Batmacumba to present a musical set inspired by the material and symbolic world of basements. Meanwhile, chef Monika Bloch will craft a themed gastronomic experience, challenging participants to explore this underground space through taste.
The event is curated by Maria Manuela Restivo (CRIA-UMinho), Daniel Maciel (ID+IPCA), and Carlos Barradas, proposing an innovative dialogue between ethnography, art, and creativity.
