Open Call for 1 PhD Research Fellowship – Ref. CRIA/DOUT/HERILIGION

Application deadline: April 5th, 2019

Open call for 1 PhD research fellowship in the framework of the project HERILIGION: The heritagization of religion and the sacralization of heritage in contemporary Europe. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 649307. The Portuguese participation in the project is funded by FCT I.P.

PROJECT: HERILIGION seeks to understand the consequences of the heritagization of religious sites, objects and practices which were not considered heritage before, and which may provoke tensions between heritage and religious constituencies, between religious and secular sacralizations and uses, and between different disciplines and management regimes. HERILIGION will produce new insights which can be used to understand, manage and defuse tensions, benefiting both religious and heritage constituencies in Europe. The research will take place at religious and heritage sites in Denmark, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, and the UK, and focus on emerging practical heritage (so-called intangible cultural heritage) in these countries.  The Portuguese project focuses on the heritagization processes connected with four strategic sites that highlight the multifarious intersections between the secular and the religious approaches to heritage. Within this processes, part of the Portuguese research will be focused on the heritagization of the sacred in Fatima and on multi-religious worship at this Marian shrine.
