The ‘Horizontes do Mar’ series of meetings aims to encourage reflection and debate on the sea within the social sciences and humanities. By bringing together researchers with different perspectives and approaches, yet who share the sea as a common thread, it seeks to provide opportunities for informal discussion and dialogue about their research, ideas and interests. Held monthly, each session will feature two participants who, following a brief presentation of their work (15 minutes), will then open the floor for discussion among all attendees (30 minutes).
The first series will be dedicated specifically to Anthropology, bringing together anthropologists from different generations who are currently engaged in, or have previously engaged in, studies of the sea in Portugal. In this sense, the inaugural cycle will serve both to take the pulse of what has been done and is currently being done, and to invigorate the maritime field within Anthropology. However, the intention is for the meetings to subsequently extend to other disciplines and geographical areas, continuing in subsequent cycles.
With the sea as their horizon, these meetings seek above all to broaden and cross horizons, giving new impetus to maritime studies through joint debate and reflection.
