Cats are beloved companions, but their presence outdoors can also raise concerns for biodiversity, making them a source of growing debate, especially on islands. FELIMAC explores how these tensions between animal welfare and biodiversity conservation unfold in Madeira and the Azores. Through ethnographic and participatory research, the project examines how the clash of knowledges, rural–urban differences, gender, care and environmental ethics, and different understandings of ecological challenges shape human–cat relations. Ultimately, FELIMAC seeks to develop more inclusive and context-sensitive approaches to animal governance that bring biodiversity protection and cat welfare into dialogue.
