Biographical Note
Degree in Sociology from ISCTE-UML (1985) and a PhD in Sociology of Education with a thesis on ethnographic research of professional teachers culture (1997). Currently, Telmo H. Caria is a professor of Sociology and Social Sciences, Sociology of Professions and Professional Identities, Sociology of Work and Professional Knowledge and Ethnographic Methodology of Social Research in Social Service, Anthropology and Social Development Degrees at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro. As a researcher of social sciences, he has always had an interdisciplinary orientation between sociology, anthropology and psychology, developing since 2002 a line of research on the subject of work and professional knowledge. Within this research line, he has been collaborating, organising and researching various professional groups (primary school teachers, special education teachers, nurses, veterinarians, agricultural extension workers, adult education trainers, forestry engineers and social workers). The ethnographic method has been used has a tool to establish theoretical and conceptual intersections between the topics of learning and non-formal education, the processes of professional work organisation, the social use of science, the power of professions in organisations and socio-cognitive processes situated in context of work.
