Abstract

For some, the painting panels of the “moliceiros” boats are just a reflection of the natural landscape, while for others it in perceived at a cultural level. Others, by the way, point out that the emblems of the “bateiras” would have preceded the decorations of the “moliceiros”, which would have been submerged in the profusion of colors and forms, acquiring an aesthetic function. But there are also those who are looking for similarities between the decorative elements of the “moliceiros” and other artifacts of the region, finding it at the cows’ yokes, concluding thus that the painting panels of the “moliceiros” would have been a way of ostentation and exhibitionism. Some others, they find a dichotomy between the ornaments of the houses, places of protection, women’s domain, using religion as a theme, and the decorative motifs of the “moliceiros”, dangerous places, men’s property, where the profane imagery reigns. Finally, for others, they grant the painting panels a statute of visual micro-narratives of the local culture, assigning to it a function of symbolic resistance. But this interpretation does not prevent that the paintings of having a touristic propose by “playing” the past and making of the “moliceiro” the representative of the cultural identity of a whole region.
