Biographical note

Maria Cardeira da Silva, professor at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, is an anthropologist interested in Arabic and Islamic contexts, Islam and gender, and in the Anthropology of Tourism and Heritage. She conducted ethnographic fieldwork in the medina of Salé, and later on in Portuguese historical sites like Mazagão and Azzamor (Morocco), Ouadane (Mauritania) and Mazagão (Amapá, Brasil), under the scope of several research projects on heritage, tourism and cultural cooperation. She is currently interested in Islamophobia, national and European public policies regarding Islam, and Islamic heritage in Europe. She is consultant of the project “CAPSAHARA – critical approaches to politics, social activism, and Islamic militancy in the Western Saharan Region” (ERC) and team member of “HERILIGION – The heritagization of religion and the sacralization of heritage in contemporary Europe” (HERA). She is the author of “Um Islão Prático” (A practical Islam: women daily performances in urban Moroccan context. Oeiras: Celta Editora, 1999), of “Castelos a Bombordo: Etnografias de Patrimónios Africanos e Memórias Portuguesas” (Castles Abroad: African ethnographies and Portuguese memories. Lisbon: CRIA, 2013). She currently leads an emergent network on ‘Peripheral Orientalisms’, an international network instigated by the rise of Islamophobia in Southern Europe and Latin America (“Revista de Estudios Internacionales Mediterráneos”, 2016, 21: 1-117, “Southern insights on the Orient and Western Orientalisms”, 21: 1-11).
