Abstract

This doctoral thesis is a result of an anthropological research focused on the concept of mandinga, in capoeira and its role in the globalization of this African-Brazilian art form in Europe. Ther esearch, which was carried out in Poland and Portugal, asks what contemporary social processes generate the notion of mandinga, as an immaterial property of capoeira, and how has mandinga been exported, appropriated and re-signified in global processes of contemporaneity? In order to respond this question I conducted three years of ethnographic fieldwork with the UNICAR capoeira group (International Union of Capoeira Regional) in Krakow, Poland, and with the Capoeirarte group, in Porto, Portugal. Going beyond the transnational process of capoeira as it manifests itself in the globalization of mandinga, this thesis also aims to situate the ways by which, in some social, cultural and political contexts in Europe, Europeans relate to external cultural practices influence by reframing the process of appropriation constructing ownership and becoming “natives” of other cultures.
