Abstract

The valorisation of the academic/intellectual capital acquired through higher education as a means for upward social mobility has been a key feature in Cape Verdean society. This is the main identity frame for several (young) Cape Verdeans, which translates a national discourse that stresses the need of constant social, political, economic, and cultural change into a personal investment to acquire educational, academic and professional capitals. This dissertation is an anthropological analysis of social life in Cape Verde, focussing on the issues of education, gender and migration, and giving voice and space to Cape Verdean women as main characters in this exploration. Promoting a dialogue between those Cape Verdean women who travelled to Portugal seeking an academic capital and those without any such capital, I will highlight the multiple arenas of intrassexual relationship (women/women) where “Cape Verdean women are constructed”, the diversity in their life trajectories, and the dynamics of reciprocity and alliance. This work is also meant to contribute to an endogenous agenda of gender studies, redressing the unbalance produced by approaches stressing intersexual dialogues (men/women), and using the local notion of “making oneself a Cape Verdean woman” as a starting point to deconstruct the category of “Cape Verdean woman”.
