Laboratory Jill Rosemary Dias

Head of the Laboratory: Maria Cardeira da Silva

Location: Edifício ID, NOVA FCSH, Av. Berna, 26, 1069-061 Lisboa

In tribute to Jill Rosemary Dias’ academic path, the laboratory JRD intends to encourage research on the intersections between Anthropology, History and Photography, particularly but not exclusively in African contexts. Initially built upon the documental, bibliographical and visual collection handed in to NOVA FCSH under CRIA’s guardianship, the laboratory Jill Rosemary Dias supports research on this collection and the development of similar lines of intervention with the award of periodical research grants. Intertwinings with CRIA’s other laboratories and working groups, namely NAVA, are also promoted, along with the cooperation with outer institutions and platforms with related concerns. Such is the case of Memórias de África e do Oriente, an online portal that hosts and disseminates the Jill Rosemary Dias visual collection. The laboratory JRD encourages the cooperation with African R&D units, especially in the fields of colonial and postcolonial studies, honouring  the anthropological standing of Jill Dias, who always stressed the need for a historical continuity in these research fields. Given its orientation, this laboratory is furthermore directed towards the museography and other cultural display activities that concern archives – particularly non official archives of different types – and photography. In this sense, the laboratory JRD presents itself as a relevant apparatus, not only for propelling interdisciplinarity and Anthropology’s laboratorial dimension, but also facilitating dissemination, education and the sharing in the public space.
