Biographical note

Francisco Freire holds a PhD in Anthropology (NOVA FCSH, 2009), and a Master in Anthropology: Colonialism and Post-Colonialism (ISCTE, 2003). His postdoctoral research (2009-2015) was funded by FCT (SFRH/BPD/47681/2008), under the title “A pertinência dos idiomas tribais nas sociedades muçulmanas contemporâneas”, with the supervision of Abdel Wedoud Ould Cheikh (CNRS) and Maria Cardeira da Silva (NOVA FCSH). He is currently the PI of an ERC funded (STG-716467) research project “CAPSAHARA: Critical approaches to politics, social activism and Islamic militancy in the western Saharan region”. He has worked in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania since 2001, dealing with political Islam, identity reconfiguration processes, and, more recently, the contemporary articulation of Saharan tribal spheres. His recently published work includes: “The Hemeila Riddle: Genealogical Reconfigurations of Pre-colonial Encounters in Southwestern Mauritania” — History and Anthropology, 28 (2), 2017:149-165 (http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/02757206.2016.1214824); and “Saharan Migrant Camel Herders: Znaga Social Status and the Global Age” — The Journal of Modern African Studies, 52 (3), 2014: 425-446 (https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/journal-of-modern-african-studies/article/saharan-migrant-camel-herders-znaga-social-status-and-the-global-age/263FE53DB7C5801E2183480271D5903F).
