Resumo
This paper draws on my long-term ethnographic investments in amateur music making and reception in Lisbon’s fado scenes. It asks questions about both the place of urban ethnography and the material stakes for musicians in a moment marked by the burgeoning of the global tourist industry along with the proliferation of heritage practices, “low cost” travel, city branding, and new practices of urban tourism. These phenomena are currently aligning to produce significant shifts in the ways in which experiences of urban popular musics and their cities are consumed, experienced, and shaped, for local residents and tourists.
Nota biográfica
Doutora em Antropologia Cultural (2005) e mestre em Música (2000) pela Duke University e licenciada em Humanidades pelo New College of Florida (1993). Atualmente é Professora Associada de Música do Dickinson College, depois de ter lecionado na Columbia University e na Universidade de Amsterdão. É autora do livro Fado Resounding: Affective Politics and Urban Life (2013, Duke University Press), uma etnografia musical sobre o fado, que recebeu o Prémio Woody Guthrie 2014 da International Association for the Study of Popular Music – US Branch (IASPM-US), para além de diversos artigos em publicações periódicas, tais como Ethnomusicology, History and Anthropology e Anthropology and Humanism. Os seus interesses de ensino e pesquisa incluem: etnomusicologia urbana; estudos do som; vocalidade; género; músicas periféricas; Portugal; o mundo lusófono; Europa do Sul.
