Thinking tourism as a cultural practice

Tourism is one of the most significant cultural enterprises of our time. Tourism has brought about new kinds of spaces as well as novel ways of engaging with ourselves and with others. It is a central component of contemporary societies that changes what counts as home and away, distance and proximity. The implosion of tourism has generated substantial academic inquiry. However, most of the inquiries avoid critical questions focusing instead on technical matters. In so doing, there is a danger in presenting tourism as an obvious phenomenon that requires little or no explanation. This presentation develops an understanding of tourism as a cultural and social practice. Tourism is much more than the logical output of modern systems and structures. It is a dynamic force packed with desires, sensibilities and social practices – a cultural laboratory in the words of Löfgren. It is the way through which modern societies engage with the world beyond. The presentation takes a post-disciplinary approach to tourism that is not so much about policing borders as integrating tourism within wider debates in Social Sciences. It is necessary to ask critical questions about tourism and to do so in a way that it does not expunge life, excitement and creativity from our inquiries.

Pau Obrador is a senior lecture in tourism and events management at Northumbria University. Pau’s research interests are in the cultures of tourism, including embodiment, mass tourism and the beach, and the construction of place identity in cultural events.
