Abstract

This work seeks to reflect on how Cape Verde has led and implemented heritage processes in colonial and post-colonial contexts. Through this historical journey, cultural practices designated as intangible cultural heritage denoted a variety of cultural meanings, social experiences and diverse settings among Cape Verdeans. In proposing a history and ethnography, the study questions how the context of colonial rule, the building of a national identity and a post national independence as triggered heritage and identity politics in the uses and appropriation of the local culture.
