Abstract

The main goals of this study are (i) to fill the information gap and research on the integrated system of national and international value chains of Japanese clam in Portugal; (ii) to analyse the economic and organizational structures of traditional Japanese clam fisheries in Portugal and the international supply markets, production technologies and means of distribution and (iii) based on the results of this study and other scientific studies on the ecology of Japanese clam in Portugal (Gaspar & Monteiro 1998; Rodrigues et al. 2006; Falcão et al. 2006; Gaspar 2010; Chainho 2011; Silva et al. 2012) and other contexts (Libralato et al. 2004; Pravoni 2004; Pravoni et al. 2006), to formulate recommendations regarding the market potentials and development of a sustainable national industry.
