Abstract

The work “A Europa é o Cacém!”/”Europe is Cacém!” is based on a multiplaced/multiple location ethnography, between Portugal and Brasil (2010-2013), which reconstructs the paths and directions of 26 individuals/subjects that belong to the same age group, the same low-income Brazilian background, the fact that they identify themselves as morenos or pretos. And they also come from the same place, the city of Mantena (Minas Gerais), and are living in the same neighbourhood: Cacém (Lisbon Metropolitan Area). Their paths and directions are marked with different kinds of mobility: space, physique, society, economy and imagination. By crossing international frontiers/borders, they are also crossing ideas, relationships and their own subjectivities. Those borders become a hazy space which allows the reflection on several disparities: family-individual, young-grown-up, center-perifery, freedom-responsability. Surpassing the notions of nation-states, the contexts of their surroundings and the interactions which it allows, provide new hierarchies and power relations while creating new social locations (Pessar e Malher, 2001). Their relationships and everyday interactions have been mediated/facilitated with/by the articulation of several characteristics as age, nationality, gender, sexuality, race and etnicity. From a theoretical approximation between urban studies, transnationalism and the intersectionalities methodological model, these are the main analysis notions I apply: mobility, difference and frontier/border, based on the contemporary mobilities and travelling between Brasil and Portugal, focusing on the experiences and subjectivities of this group.
